Join a group of peers ages 23+ to backpack through lush valleys and soaring peaks of Alaska’s Brooks Range. Embrace the opportunity to take a two-week break from your busy routine and find new adventures in a beautiful and remote wilderness environment. Enjoy nearly 24 hours of daylight as you hike across sweeping tundra and high mountain passes. While you travel, keep an eye out for Arctic wildlife like caribou, moose, Dall sheep, and musk oxen.
Starting with the basics of outdoor living, you’ll gain experience and confidence throughout the course. Learn to pack your backpack efficiently, use a map to navigate off trail, and cook tasty meals on a campstove. As the course progresses, move on to more advanced topics, like risk management and first aid in the outdoors.
This expedition isn’t a guided tour—expect to learn and put into practice the skills you need to organize your own backcountry trips. Build community with your team and apply your leadership and communication skills in an outdoor setting. Head home with the confidence to lead family and friends on your next backpacking trip.

“Especially in an age of such rampant technology and development, I find it crucial to reunite with the wilderness, connect with others through phenomenal teamwork, and rely on nothing but your own instincts and abilities. It may seem strange to much of society, but I think it's exhilarating to navigate with a map and compass, immerse yourself amongst majestic mountains and rivers, and truly understand the place of humans in the world. I can confidently say that NOLS was the best experience of my life, and I felt very compelled to give back to such a unique organization and enable others to experience what I did.”
