The Patagonia Coastal Expedition offers a rare opportunity to navigate pristine waterways and trek through temperate rainforests in one of the world’s most breathtaking and remote landscapes. This month-long journey will challenge you to master new skills, embrace leadership roles, and explore your limits as you travel by sea kayak and on foot through an environment few ever experience.

Learning to navigate fjords and mountains independently requires teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills essential for success in life and any career. Each challenge you encounter, from navigating unpredictable weather to managing group dynamics, becomes an opportunity to grow as a leader and collaborator.
At NOLS, we believe the wilderness teaches practical lessons that stay with you for life. The Patagonia Coastal Expedition empowers you to take those lessons off the water and trail, equipping you to thrive in uncertain and dynamic environments.
Patagonia’s coastal region is a wild, breathtaking expanse of fjords, islands, and rugged mountains. Your route will take you through some of the most remote and scenic places in South America, places few people ever see. You’ll paddle through 60 to 100 nautical miles of glassy waters, camp on hidden beaches, and explore lush forests and rocky summits. With each turn, you’ll encounter unique wildlife, from the elusive puma and pudú (a small Andean deer) to the majestic condor soaring above.
This diverse landscape presents endless possibilities. One day, you’ll paddle past towering cliffs rising from the sea; the next, you’ll trek off-trail through temperate rainforests or summit an unnamed peak with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. As you travel, you’ll gain insight into both Patagonian culture and the NOLS approach to expedition living—learning valuable lessons about simplicity, teamwork, and respect for the land.

Throughout this course, you’ll develop the technical, leadership, and interpersonal skills required for independent travel in remote environments. You’ll learn to:
• Sea Kayak through Fjords: Master paddling techniques, navigation, and hazard assessment while traveling along the coast.
• Backpack off Trail: Navigate challenging terrain, manage pack weight, and learn camp-craft techniques that improve your ability to manage risk and comfortable backcountry travel.
• Embrace Leadership Roles: Practice decision-making, group management, and effective communication in real-world scenarios.
• Develop Cultural Competence: Engage with local communities, build cultural awareness, and connect meaningfully with the people and environment around you.
With each challenge, you’ll grow in confidence and competence, developing the skills needed to lead both in the wilderness and in life.
A highlight of this course is the opportunity for independent student group travel. As you gain competence in kayaking, navigation, and risk management, your instructors will give your group the chance to travel independently, without direct supervision. Whether you’re paddling to a remote island or backpacking into the forest, this is your chance to put everything you’ve learned into practice.
If your team demonstrates proficiency, your course may culminate in a multi-day student-led expedition, allowing you to experience the freedom and responsibility of self-sufficient wilderness travel.

Weather: The weather in Patagonia is notoriously unpredictable. In a single day, you may experience sunshine, rain, and high winds, with temperatures that range from warm to freezing. The coastal temperate rainforests thrive in these conditions, and your instructors will teach you how to stay warm, dry, and safe in this ever-changing environment.
Remote Living: On this expedition, you’ll be far from medical facilities and modern conveniences. Self-reliance is essential, and your team must be prepared to handle any situation. With wilderness medicine-certified instructors and well-stocked first aid kits, you’ll learn to manage risks and respond to emergencies with calm and confidence.
Group Dynamics: Living and traveling with a small group in challenging conditions requires patience, empathy, and teamwork. You’ll discover what it takes to lead and follow effectively, developing the interpersonal skills needed to build trust and collaboration—critical skills in both the wilderness and the workplace.
