  • What does WUMP stand for?

At NOLS Wilderness Medicine, WUMP stands for Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals. In addition to gaining practical wilderness medicine knowledge, participants can earn CME credits and key certifications:

    • Epinephrine Auto-injector Certification
    • This Course Will Upgrade your EMT to a WEMT Certificaiton
    • Wilderness First Responder (80 hour)
  • What is a CME credit?

A CME (Continuing Medical Education) credit is a unit of measure that represents time spent in an accredited educational activity designed to improve the knowledge, skills, and competence of medical professionals through various CME activities. CME credits are often required for medical professionals to maintain their licenses and certifications.

  • How much is 1 CME credit?

Typically, 1 CME credit corresponds to one hour of participation in an accredited educational activity. However, the specific time and effort required to earn a CME credit can vary depending on the specific CME course and the accrediting body.

  • Who can claim CME credits?

CME credits can be claimed by licensed healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants (PAs), and other medical professionals who participate in accredited educational activities. Family physicians, in particular, benefit from CME credits to stay updated in their field.

  • Are CME credits worth it?

Yes, CME credits are essential for medical professionals as they help ensure ongoing competence, keep professionals up-to-date with the latest medical advancements, and are often required to maintain medical licenses, certifications, and professional credentials. CME courses approved by recognized organizations, such as the American Medical Association, ensure that medical professionals maintain their competency.

  • What is the difference between CEU and CME credits?

CME (Continuing Medical Education) credits are specific to medical professionals and focus on clinical and medical education. CEU (Continuing Education Units) credits, on the other hand, apply to a broader range of professions and educational activities outside of medicine. CME credits are essential for maintaining medical licensure, while CEUs can be used across various fields to demonstrate ongoing professional development.

  • What are the benefits of continuing medical education?

Continuing Medical Education (CME) provides several benefits, including keeping healthcare professionals informed about the latest medical research and treatments, improving clinical skills, enhancing patient care, fulfilling licensing requirements, and supporting career development.
CME is particularly beneficial for those in family medicine to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.

  • Can PAs work in wilderness medicine?

Yes, Physician Assistants (PAs) can work in wilderness medicine. They are well-suited for roles in remote or austere environments, providing emergency care, preventive medicine, and managing medical conditions in the wilderness. Wilderness medicine training enhances their ability to deliver care in these unique settings.
