The Wind River Range offers a perfect setting for adventure with its stunning vistas and rugged terrain. Over 14 days, you’ll journey through pristine alpine meadows, past crystal-clear lakes, and beneath the towering peaks of this remote mountain range. The diverse landscapes provide endless exploration opportunities, from high-altitude hiking to peaceful lakeside campsites.
Each day, you’ll learn something new—whether it's mastering wilderness navigation, building a shelter, or understanding the intricacies of Leave No Trace principles. In the evenings, you'll relax and bond with your group as you reflect on the day’s challenges and triumphs. This course is designed to equip you with technical wilderness skills and interpersonal leadership abilities, setting you up for success in the backcountry and beyond. Throughout the 14-day adventure, you’ll gain practical skills and confidence in key areas, including:
Backpacking Techniques: Learn the essentials of navigating difficult terrain, setting up camp, and packing efficiently for multi-day wilderness excursions.
Navigation Skills: Develop your ability to read maps, use a compass, and safely navigate challenging landscapes.
Wilderness First Aid: Acquire essential skills for responding to outdoor emergencies and caring for your team in remote settings.
Leave No Trace Principles: Master the practices that help preserve and protect wild spaces while minimizing your impact on the environment.
Leadership & Teamwork: Hone your decision-making, communication, and leadership abilities as you take turns leading and supporting your fellow participants.
These skills are not only applicable in the wilderness. Still, they will serve you in every aspect of your personal and professional life, empowering you to lead with confidence and navigate any challenges that come your way.
Day 1: Meet your instructors and fellow participants at the NOLS base camp, where you’ll get a gear check, course overview, and introductions to your expedition team.
Days 2–7: Embark on your backpacking journey, starting with low-elevation hikes and gradually increasing in difficulty. You'll focus on mastering essential outdoor skills, with time for leadership practice, group discussions, and team-building exercises.
Days 8–13: Continue your trek through more challenging terrain while engaging in leadership activities and honing your problem-solving skills. You’ll have opportunities to lead sections of the trip, fostering confidence and learning to balance group needs with individual goals.
Day 14: Return to the NOLS base camp for a final course debrief and celebration. Reflect on your experiences and the connections you've made during this transformative journey.
