Gregory M. Avis

Greg is managing partner of Bangtail Partners, a private investment firm with a focus on impact investing. He is a co- founder and former managing director of Summit Partners, one of the nation’s leading private equity and venture capital firms, which has raised over $43 billion in capital since its inception in 1984.

Greg has served on the boards of more than 50 public and private companies. His non-profit work has included service on the boards of Williams College (chair), Accion Opportunity Fund (chair), Cleveland Clinic, Earthjustice, the James Irvine Foundation (chair), The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) (chair), New Profit, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Schwab Charitable Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation (founding board chair-2007 and interim president-2018), The Sobrato Organization, Tinworks Art, and The Wilderness Society (Action Fund).

Bangtail Partners has spearheaded a number of projects in Montana and environs, including the rejuvenation of four hotels and a theater, the development of a workforce housing project, and supporting contemporary art through Tinworks Art.

Other company investments by Bangtail Partners include Alosant, ASSOS, Foodsmart, Foundant Technologies, Intertie, Universe, IPSY, Quiq, Tatcha, Sunrun, SoFi, and 24/7 Software.

Greg has taught mathematics at Eastside College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto for over 20 years and is teaching mathematics at Montana State University for the 2024/2025 academic year. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Political Economy from Williams College and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, with distinction, from Harvard Business School.
