Shana was a student in the first NOLS Wilderness Medicine course in July 1990. She joined the NOLS Wilderness Medicine instructional team in 1995 and currently serves as NOLS Wilderness Medicine's Assistant Director. She has had the great fortune of teaching for NOLS in exciting locations such as Japan, Australia, Hawaii, and Oklahoma. She is an EMT-Intermediate and volunteers with the Lander ambulance squad. In past lives she worked as the Associate Director of Cornell Outdoor Education, a NOLS field instructor, and a geologist and archaeologist (dug up 300 skeletons in one summer). For many years she chaired the Wilderness Risk Management Conference Steering Committee. She and her family lived in China for a year, failing to become fluent in Chinese but succeeding in teaching English without actually understanding rules of grammar.
